If you are travelling overseas, or sending Arizona documents for use in a foreign country, you may be required to have the documents certified or apostilled by Arizona Secretary of State. An “apostille” or a certificate of “authentication” is issued to certify an Arizona notary public, court clerk, or state document custodian to a foreign country. Apostilles have been adopted internationally by the Hague Convention as a uniform way of verifying documents sent between countries.

Arizona apostille tips:

tip 2Arizona vital records such as birth, death or marriage certificates should be issued within the last 5 years, and certified by the State Registrar or Assistant State Registrar. Certified copies that have the watermark "For Government Use Only" are not eligible for apostilles.

tip 2The document might be in a foreign language, no translation is required. However, the notarial statement (acknowledgment or jurat) must be in English! (see Arizona sample acknowledgment and jurat)

tip 2

If you need to get an Arizona state apostille for a document notarized by an Arizona notary public - make sure the notary includes the notarial statement. If there is no notarial statement on the document (just the signature and the stamp), the document will be rejected!

tip 2Academic documents such as diplomas, transcripts, verification letters and general school records issued  high schools, colleges, and universities of Arizona, must be certified by the school registrar, and notarized prior to be presented for an apostille.

tip 2Any requests going to Puerto Rico or any U.S. territory need a “notarial capacity certificate”

tip 2

The State of Arizona does not issue electronic apostilles.
